MapNYC Contest FAQ

Welcome to MapNYC! It's a contest where you map places in the city to win Bitcoin and support our local community. To get started, download the StreetCred app and follow the instructions. Make sure you join our WhatsApp group to stay updated on the latest news and events.

When does the contest start and end?

The contest starts on May 4 at 12AM and repeats every week.

What are the prizes?

Every week, the top 10 winners take home Bitcoin. The value of Bitcoin changes every day, but as of this moment, 1 Bitcoin is worth $8,835.

How do I play?

First, download the StreetCred app. When you open the game, you’ll see an interactive map. Your goal is to make the map more accurate by adding nearby places, as well as improving places that other players have added by filling in missing information. Any business or landmark counts as a place, from the local diner to the dentist’s office—you just need to be physically present at that location.

The main game piece in StreetCred is the cube. You'll start out with 10 cubes, and have the option to drop a cube every time you add or improve a place on the map.

When you drop a cube, you'll appear on the MapNYC leaderboard, so you can track your progress towards winning Bitcoin. You'll also be able to see how you stack up to your neighbors on your local leaderboard.

How do I win?

If you’re one of the top 10 players in a week, you’ll win Bitcoin. Track your progress on the Leaderboard, where you can also find the results for previous contests.

Winners will be contacted at the email addresses they used to sign up for StreetCred, so be sure to check your email. We'll also share the winners every week in the MapNYC WhatsApp group.

Can I win both the global contest and MapNYC?

Yes! Every cube you drop in MapNYC also counts towards the weekly global contest. That means you can win 0.012 Bitcoin for dropping the most cubes in NYC and also 0.02 Bitcoin for doing the same thing in the world.

Can anyone play?

You must be at least eighteen years old, and not employed by or affiliated with StreetCred Labs, Inc.

How do I receive my Bitcoin prize?

If you win the contest, congratulations! In the US, we use Coinbase to send Bitcoin. In order to receive your payment, you must set up a Coinbase account.

Wait, couldn’t I just make up places and cheat?

You will not win Bitcoin if you cheat. All winners will be reviewed by our data validation algorithms and any cheaters will be disqualified.

Can I upload photos I find on the web?

No, you must upload original photos, taken using your phone’s camera at the location you’re adding or improving. We aren’t concerned about photo quality. Any player found uploading photos that are not their own will be permanently disqualified.

Can I just make up places?

No, all data must be accurate. Spammers will be permanently disqualified.

Why is it a problem if I cheat?

The Bitcoin prizes are made possible by our services revenue, which comes from selling place data (i.e. store hours, location, and photos). We depend on our players to provide accurate, up-to-date information about the places in the app.

I’m going to cheat anyway. What are the consequences?

You won’t win Bitcoin if you cheat, but you will help us train our data validation framework. All winners will be both automatically and manually reviewed every week as we refine our data validation algorithms. Players faking location, spamming, or uploading photos that are not their own will be permanently disqualified.

What do you do with my data?

We never share your location or places you’ve visited with anyone. Our dataset is completely anonymized and includes only facts about the important places around us, not personal user data.

Something went wrong. What do I do?

Occasionally our app may experience some bugs. Feel free to let us know about any issues.
